    ABOUT SREY BOWRON-MUTH

I am a photographer based in Wellington, New Zealand. I specialise in family and children’s portraits, babies, lifestyle photography and weddings.

My journey in photography started during my travels into the Himalayas and while visiting the Angkor temples.  I bought my first “big” camera when I was an archaeology student. My first photographic experiences involved photographing and editing images of stone tools and lifestyle images of excavation life.

In 2015, I took a year off work to be a mum, and during that time, I studied towards my Diploma in Professional Photography through the Photography Institute. Part of it was to keep my brain stimulated in between changing nappies and making lunches for two under-2-year-olds. Part of it was because I wanted to learn to take better photos and improve my technique. I am a creative soul, and love to capture character and mood in my images.

When I am not photographing, my interests include archaeology, travel, old ruins, getting into nature and exploring creative pursuits.  In the weekends I try to get into nature as much as possible – lots of camping and hiking trips with the kids.

    What’s in a name?

When I was choosing a name for my photography, I wanted something that reflected my love for beauty in nature. Two of my favourite stories were titled “Wild Swans”.

As a child, my favourite fairy tale Hans Christian Andersen about a princess who rescues her brothers from a spell cast by an evil queen. The tale was first published on 2 October 1838 as the first installment in Andersen's Fairy Tales Told for Children.

As a teenager, one of my favourite books was “Wild Swans: Three Daughters of China’ – the moving story by Chinese writer Jung Chang. The story spans a century, recounting the lives of three female generations in China.

And then there is the beautiful poem by W.B. Yeats "The Wild Swans at Coole". There is a lot of beauty in this world. Yeats captures the beauty of nature through carefully crafted words. I try to capture that through beautifully crafted images.
